Our Culfoich Fold of Pedigree Highland Cattle was founded with the purchase of an Achnacloich bred cow in 1992 from Cardhu Distillery. Although originally bought as ‘grazing assistants’ for the fields surrounding the newly built farm house, we soon realized the unique qualities that make Highland Cattle such a great breed.

From here we purchased a few select cows and heifers from Innisard, Scourie, Shenavallie, Tordarroch, Millerston and West Merkland. Artificial Insemination was used initially – mainly from Douneside and Tinto bulls to establish our growing herd.

Our first foundation Stock bull was Exhibit 2nd of Auch, purchased privately from the Knox family at Innisard in 1999.
He proved to be tremendous breeder of foundation heifers and is the sire behind many of the cows in the Fold today. His first son Orison of Culfoich was Male champion at Oban in 2004 and sold to the Murray Cooper fold for 4200 guineas. He then went on to be Male champion at the Royal Highland, Yorkshire and Royal Shows. Semen from Orison is available from Cogent. Heifers from Exhibit have sold up to 3100gns and his progeny can still be found in the show ring.

In 2005 our stock bull Donnachadh Ruadh 1st of West Merkland was purchased in Oban for 4200gns. He not only proved to be a consistent show winner including Male Champion at the Royal Highland Show in 2006 but bred exceptionally well.

His first son, Brogach 2nd of Culfoich, was reserve Male champion and sold for 8000gns in Oban in 2008
Gaisgeach 1st of Culfoich, another reserve male champion, sold in Oban 2009 for 5600gns and later went on to secure Male champion at the Royal Welsh Show 2009.

Above, you can see Exhibit 2nd of Auch and his Son Orison of Culfoich followed by Donnachadh Ruadh 1st of West Merkland and his son Gaisgeach 1st of Culfoich.

Another 4000gns export to W. Sibe in Germany was secured in 2008 and heifers from Donnachadh have also sold tremendously well at auction.
A 3 year old in calf heifer and two heifer calves have recently been exported to Germany in a five figure private sale to Gerold Lintleman.
To round off a successful year the Culfoich Fold was awarded the UK Highland Fold of the year 2010 a brilliant reward for all our hard work.

Above, from left to right: Gaisgeach 1st of Culfoich taking a championship at the Royal Welsh Show in 2009, Lasgaire 2nd of Culfoich sold privately to Mr VonBuscel and finally Sonasag 1st of Culfoich taking championships at home and abroad.

Today our Pedigree Highland Fold stands at 15 cows which have been selected for their docility, fertility, mothering ability and their confirmation. We keep numbers this low so that we can produce a high quality animal that shows the true potential of the breed, while still retaining it's iconic characteristics.

In 2017 we went to the Stirling multi-breed Bull Sales with two bulls, Donal 1st of Culfoich who sold for 2,400gns to the Burns Family at Bonnybridge and Bryden 1st of Culfoich. Bryden is one of the best bulls we've brought out, a modern bull with a powerful frame and good muscling and topline, he went on to take the Championship and top price as well as gather praise from breeders of all breeds presented at the sale. Bryden sold for 5,000gns to A & P Casey in Orkney.
